:: Bidirectional Color - FREE Pattern to You ::
Today I have a special gift for you: a completely free pattern that I've lovingly designed for this season đ„°

Bidirectional Color is an expression of balance between simplicity and detail, designed for those seeking a versatile accessory with a distinctive touch in a head covering. The stockinette stitch enhances the fabricâs texture and fluidity, while the strategic use of color adds dynamism and personality. The reversible structure allows it to be worn with or without a fold, adapting to different styles and needs. Itâs available in two versions. Itâs minimalist, highlighting solid tones, and you can also add details with other tones. Perfect to complement any outfit, itâs a project that invites you to play with color and discover how a well-thought-out design can transform the everyday into something special.

This reversible hat is knitted in the round with two colors and no seams. It begins with a provisional cast-on to knit Side 1, and then the stitches are picked up to knit Side 2 in the opposite direction. It can be worn with a fold of approximately 2 to 5 cm for a snugger fit, or worn without a fold for a slightly looser style at the back. It easily adapts to any size, plus itâs completely unisex. These instructions are written for the Magic Loop method.

N O T E S
To choose the size, I suggest selecting a size that has between 1â-2â / 2-5 cm of negative ease compared to your head circumference. The garment measurements are approximate values; they depend on the yarn weight used and each knitterâs tension.
The yarn usage values are approximate; I generally add 10% more to ensure you have enough material to complete the project.
You can use whichever provisional cast-on method you prefer. I recommend using yarn in a contrasting color and similar weight to what youâre using in your project. This will make the process of picking up stitches easier later.
Make sure C1 and C2 are the same weight. Since this is a reversible garment, both sides must have the same tension to achieve a uniform and aesthetically pleasing result.

Use a provisional cast-on for the stitches, cast on 72 (78, 82, 86) sts with yarn C1 according to size. Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round (BOR). Be careful that the sts donât get twisted.
BODY: SIDE 1 - C1
Knit in stockinette stitch for 30 (36, 40, 40) rnds or 5â (6â, 6.7â, 6.7â) / 13 (15, 17, 17 cm), before making the decreases.
CROWN
In this section, decreases are made on either side of the hat. In the same round, four stitches are decreased. It is important to distribute the stitches evenly across each needle.
Distribute 36 (39, 41, 43) sts on each needle.
Rnd 1: k1, pm, ssk, k30 (k33, k35, k37), k2tog, pm, k2, pm, ssk, k30 (k33, k35, k37), k2tog, k1.
Rnd 2: k1, sm, k to marker, sm, k2, sm, k to end.
Rnd 3: k1, sm, ssk, k to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm, k2, sm, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
Rnd 4: repeat rnd 2.
Repeat rounds 3 and 4 a total of 9 (10, 12, 13) times.
You should have 32 (30, 30, 30) sts total; 16 (15, 15,15) sts on each needle.
To achieve a tighter fit at the back of the hat, repeat Round 3 four or five times at the end of the crown. This will reduce the length without altering the shape.
FINISHING
Make an invisible Kitchener stitch bind-off. Use a long tail of at least 3 times the width of the final stitches youâre going to bind off.
BODY: SIDE 2 â C2
Pick up all the sts that are on the provisional cast-on and return them to the needles. Join yarn C2 to work Side 2 in the opposite direction from C1. Knit 1 round in purl stitch.
Knit in stockinette stitch for 30 (36, 40, 40) rnds. Next, continue with the crown section for the decreases, as presented in Side 1, using yarn C2.
Before making the final bind-off of the hat, weave in all the ends on the inside.
To finish the project, use the Kitchener method to bind off the hat using yarn C2, as indicated in Side 1.
FINISHING
Weave in the ends and gently block your project.

Thank you for the versatile hat pattern! I have a skein of hand dyed yarn that will be perfect for this. On a similar note, I have also written up a free pattern for fingerless gloves. Excited to see the knitting community grow on substack âșïž
