Here is a brief list of what I consider to be the most important aspects of this topic.
For more definition in your design, use colors that contrast well with each other.
Choose a dominant color. If in doubt, take a black-and-white photo to see the difference.
Build your palette by placing the colors together and comparing them.
Tension varies greatly between different techniques, jacquard, mosaic, or brioche. You will need to make a tension swatch, there is a big difference between a flat swatch and one knitted in the round.
For jacquard, use a larger needle size than recommended as it tends to be tighter.
Floating yarns inside the garment are a critical problem with jacquard, try not to leave them too loose or tight.
When working with this technique in 2 or 3 colors at the same time, you can use the dominant thread in your right hand and the second thread in your left hand.
The trick is not to relax or tighten too much; practice helped me a lot.
The wrong side is just as important as the front side, try not to twist the threads.
Do not cut the threads unless necessary, you will have a cleaner project.
Block the garment carefully, delicately, and patiently.
